EU Takes Acomplia Off Market

Tags: acomplia, EMA, FDA, risk, weight loss drug
I’ve always avoided using weight loss drugs, and advised friends to only use ones that have built up a solid reputation over the years. I hate to read news articles about people desperate to lose weight becoming ill due to risky drug use.The European Union has taken Acomplia off the market. Acomplia is a weight loss drug developed by pharmaceutical group Sanofi-Aventis. The European Medicines Authority concluded that the risks involved in using the drug do not outweigh its positive effects. A recent study has shown that people taking the drug are twice more likely to develop psychiatric disorders. Now, maybe it’s just me, but i’d rather be a bit overweight than that. Interestingly, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have never actually approved the drug for sale on the US market.Sanofi-Aventis, the French pharmaceutical group, suffered a crippling blow to the prospects for its weight-loss drug Acomplia yesterday when regulators ordered the product to be withdrawn across the European Union. The European Medicines Authority concluded that the benefits no longer outweighed the risks for the drug - known generically as rimonabant - after reviewing data suggesting that obese and overweight patients had twice the risk of psychiatric disorders as those on a placebo.Read full article here.

Device forces smaller bites

Did you know that you can limit calorie intake by taking smaller bites? I never thought about it, but it does make sense. A small company is introducing a device that restricts jaw movement, forcing you to take smaller bites. I came across it through Google, the news article is from last year. To me the device doesn’t actually look comfortable. Won’t it cause problems with your jaw? They’ve tested the device on 50 Europeans, and will be starting trials in the US soon. If approved in the US it would be the first oral-weight loss device gaining approval.Small Bite Inc. CEO Denis Mulder displays his company’s device, which is designedto help people lose weight by making them take smaller bites, ultimately reducing theamount of food they eat. The Haverford company hopes to start patient clinical trialsin Philadelphia early next year.Americans perennially try to lose weight. They try diets. They try pills andsupplements. Some even opt for surgery to make their stomachs smaller. But many of these methods don’t work long-term, or, in the case of bariatric surgery, not everyone is ready for such a drastic step. Now one company, Small Bite Inc., thinks it may have an answer.Full article in PDF format, right here.

Don’t we just love freaky news? Whether it’s about a man with 3 nipples, a woman with a beard or the world’s fattest man - we can’t get enough of it. Mexican heavyweight Manuel Uribe has been in the news recently because he is getting married. Fat people can get married? Who would have thought! Beside that, he lost hundreds of kilograms making him the biggest fat loser on Earth. He got that big because of fast food, which he got addicted to while staying in the US. Pictures and videos of Manuel and his girlfriend have now been seen by millions. I don’t feel that overweight any more after seeing him.The 42-year-old was once the world’s heaviest man and can do little more than sit up in bed.But as this video shows he has already shed nearly 40 stone and now looks set to scoop another world record - the greatest loser of weight - as he tones up for his wedding to hairdresser Claudia Solis. More here, including a video and photos of mister Uribe.

The dangers of hidden fats
Posted by george
About time, in my opinion. They should have done it way sooner : warnings on food that contain dangerous fats. Look at the Western World, obesity is a growing problem that needs to be stopped. It starts with education. Educate people about WHAT THEY ARE EATING. Not everyone knows what the heck they are eating. And then you have certain companies marketing basically fast foods like they will solve all your health problems. Warnings on food products will make the dangers visible, whether people will read them is another question. But at least it will put the responsibility with the consumer. They can’t hide behind : “Oh I didn’t know!”. Honest businesses should be supporting measures like these. According to research those “you will die of smoking” warnings did have a noticeable effect on the amount of people that smoke.Shoppers are to be warned about the hidden health dangers of snacks such as cheese sandwiches and buttered toast under plans being drawn up by food watchdogs. As obesity figures soar, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has launched a drive aimed at cutting the consumption of saturated fats, which can clog arteries and lead to heart disease. The agency commissioned consumer research which showed that shock tactics such as graphic images of furred blood vessels and fat deposits were the best way to change people’s diet.advertisementAlthough the campaign is not due to start until next year, one industry magazine, The Grocer, said the FSA is about to test messages designed to show that everyday foods - primarily meat, dairy, snacks and confectionery - are far higher in saturated fats than people realise. The Telegraph

The Christmas Weight
Posted by george
Hello people,Keeping myself exercising is not an easy thing to do. It just seems that as soon as I take a few days off from exercising I end up having a lot of trouble getting started again. Fitness feels great but getting to the gym seems to be an obstacle for me. I don’t know if this is something many people have, but I am looking for a solution! The question is : How can one motivate him/herself to go to the fitness centre? And hey, it’s only a 5 minute walk for my house. It isn’t the distance. What is keeping me from going? Laziness? I feel bad whenever I skip fitness. My wife isn’t at home when I usually have to go to the gym so no help there. My wife can be really persuasive Anyway, lots of people have trouble maintaining their weight loss activities. Especially after holidays such as Christmas. Here is a small article on how you can keep going:MOST people who embarked on a weight loss diet this New Year will be starting to feel the benefit and see the result, as the scales show that those pounds are starting to shift. You get a really positive feeling from seeing that your hard work is paying off, but don’t expect too much.A healthy weight loss of one to two pounds a week is much easier to maintain than dramatic weight loss. It is much safer too.CLICK HERE for the whole article.Speak soon.George.
