The Mini-Gastric Bypass (MGB)
MGB => Short,
Simple, Effective Weight Loss Surgery
►The
Mini Gastric Bypass (MGB) is a Short, Simple, Successful,
Reversible Laparoscopic gastric bypass weight loss surgery.
►The
operation usually takes only 30 min., hospital stay less than 24 hours.
►The Mini Gastric Bypass
(MGB) is low risk, has excellent
long term weight loss, minimal pain and can be easily reversed or
revised. The MGB decreases hunger (Ghrelin)
and increases
satiety/feeling full (Peptide YY).
►For over 10 years, more than 4,500 people from all across America,
all 50 states and around the world have chosen the MGB:

the authors reported on a series of 350 patients with similar high
success levels.
►Studies
show that the MGB is more effective than the LAP-BAND® and safer than the RNY Gastric Bypass. In

"Swiss Surgeons Abandon the Band"
After 400 Bands, a 40% Failure at 5 years and
Predicted 100% Failure at 10 years!
Leading Swiss Hospital Abandons the
"Band"
A team of
Swiss doctors investigated the outcome of laparoscopic gastric banding
for obesity (presented at the 24th Annual Meeting of the American
Society for Bariatric Surgery, June 2007.) In 1996 they chose the
"Band" as surgery for all morbidly obese, by 5 yrs 39% had poor outcomes
and their data predict that by 10 yrs most bands will have a poor
outcome. The hospital has "Abandoned the Band." Accordingly
"The “survival” of bands seems poor. Therefore, at our institution, we
have
abandoned the Band for obesity"
Poor Band outcomes (band loss or poor weight loss)
Dr. Rutledge's Bariatric
Program at St. Rose De Lima Hospital Identified as one of the Best in
the Nation!
A new national study of bariatric surgery discharge data
from hospitals all across the country predicts bariatric surgical
outcomes and compares the actual surgical results and complications with
the predicted/expected results and outcomes. This study showed
that in contrast to the expected complication rates of over 6%,
Dr.
Rutledge's bariatric program at St. Rose Hospital in Henderson Nevada
had an actual complication rate of just over 1%. This was graded
as 5 stars, one of the best weight loss surgery programs in the country.
Mini-Gastric Bypass "Cures"
Diabetes in Over 85% of Diabetics
Hi Everyone,
I am now 10 days post-op MGB and feeling great! No nausea, no
pain. I am walking on air BECAUSE: 10 days ago I WAS a Diabetic, now,
I am no longer on insulin. I was taking 90u of insulin a day.
After surgery my insulin requirement dropped down to 20-30u/day. I am
now off all insulin completely. My blood sugars are testing 75-130
throughout the day. I am no longer on blood pressure meds which tests on average
109/70! I no longer have to eat sugar-free crap. Any weight loss
to me is icing on the cake! God is good and so is Dr Rutledge. One
unforeseen complication is the urge to start jumping up and down at odd
times of the day while saying WHEEEE and YIPEEE!
Many happy returns of the day!

Hello All!
I haven't written in a LONG TIME! My name is Kory and I had my surgery
on Feb 20th, 2008 with Dr. R in Vegas. I wanted to share a great moment
with all of you. I have been heavy my ENTIRE LIFE...well at least since
age 5. I am a Marine Wife and each year we have celebrate the birthday
of the Marine Corps at the Marine Corps ball. It is a very formal event
where the women wear gowns etc. I have always loved going to the ball,
but dreaded finding a gown that fit and was of course uncomfortable all
night knowing I looked like a HOUSE in my gown. Well NOT THIS YEAR! This
was the FIRST ball since my surgery. I went shopping for a gown with my
mom. I was able to buy a gown OFF the RACK and it fit me PERFECT! I am
pleased to say I wore a size 6 petite! It was a GORGEOUS Gown and I
received SOOO many compliments. For the first Ball in 12 years, I was
HAPPY, felt comfortable and could wear a pair of heels all night without
my feet killing me! I have uploaded a picture of my husband and I at the
ball to the website. THANKS Dr. R for helping me make every DREAM come
TRUE!

Subject: GREAT NEWS!!!
I just wanted to share with you ladies, I received the results of my
1 month follow-up blood work and my cholesterol was 143!!!! With high
cholesterol running in my family, I have never had a reading 220. Since
I have always exercised, my good cholesterol was always high enough to
keep me off medication until this past summer when my total cholesterol
skyrocketed to 283! I called my family doctor and asked her if I should
stop taking my Simvastatin since the MGB surgery was obviously
successful at getting my cholesterol under control. She advised me to go
off the medication for 3 months and then we would do another blood test
to make sure it was still under 200. Whooo hooo!! That means I am off my
blood pressure meds and cholesterol meds and my psychiatrist also
reduced my Effexor from 225mg to 150mg and I haven't had any bouts of
depression.
I tell ya this MGB was WAY worth it!!!
-Tanya
Dear Dr. Rutledge,
My surgery was performed on August 13th, 2008.
Today is just a day or so short of 90 days, and I thought I would take
the opportunity to report in. As of this morning I am down 58 lbs. I
feel absolutely terrific, and am thrilled with the performance of my MGB.
Other than some minor adjustments in food intake, (I am able now to
distinguish the difference between the idealized thought of a nice juicy
piece of red meat, and the eating of the actual meat itself!). My former
‘love’ of good food has been drastically altered, and it is astounding
to see what a small quantity of food it now takes to leave me feeling
completely satiated, and not wanting or craving for more.
There is, (at least for me), a definitive physiological
side to food. That is probably the biggest adjustment I have found is
re-learning how to eat, and how to think about food. I have lost any and
all pain I was experiencing prior to surgery,
I sleep better, My sinus congestion, (interestingly enough), has been
dramatically reduced, and overall I am thrilled and tickled with the
results of the procedure.
On the date of our surgery one of the other parties we
connected with was a young woman from Toronto, Canada, who was there
with her mother, (to support her mother’s surgery). I wish I could
recall this gal’s name, she was terrific. She had her MGB some 8 months
earlier, and in the interim of time had lost 85 lbs(!), which resulted
in her mother and several friends following her down wanting the same
procedure. This gal should us her “before” pictures, and you could
scarcely believe it was the same person! I now realize I have just
27lbs. to drop over the new three months, (a rate less than half of that
I have been averaging), to meet her weight loss.
It seems completely implausible, but clearly,
(and wonderfully) is happening. I wish I could travel around the country
for you and meet people who are wondering about the decision to have
this operation and could share with them what is happening to me. I am
so pleased it is hard to adequately express.
Thank you so much for your making this wonderful
change available to me. You have one very satisfied customer in me!
Best Wishes, Alan P.

Dr Peraglie's New Paper
Published: Laparoscopic Mini-Gastric Bypass
(MGB) in the Super-Super Obese
New study by Dr. Peraglie shows Laparoscopic
Mini-Gastric Bypass (MGB) is a successful therapy in the Super-Super
Obese. Dr Peraglie of The Centers of Laparoscopic Obesity Surgery
(CLOS) Florida, Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center reported on the
MGB in the super-super obese patient. Dr Peraglie concluded that mini-gastric bypass (MGB) is a
technically simple and safe procedure in SSO patients. MGB has the
advantages of being a single stage procedure, being easily reversible
and revisable in a laparoscopic procedure and does not sacrifice
portions of the stomach or implant foreign materials.

Study concludes: Laparoscopic Mini-Gastric Bypass is a
technically simple, safe, and effective procedure in the treatment of
morbid obesity and its associated medical illnesses. Moreover, the
procedure is easily reversible laparoscopically when post-operative
complication occurs. Study
from Beirut Lebanon showed MGB is a safe and effective operation

Study Shows Advantages of
Mini-Gastric Bypass Over RNY Bypass
-
Mini-Gastric Bypass Surgery Proves Effective Over More Invasive RNY
(Click Here to Read the Paper) A recent study showed that the rates of hospitalization
after MGB drop dramatically, and the surgery itself is shorter, safer and
easier to perform than the RNY.
MGB patients had overall low rates of
complications. Dr. Rutledge lead author of the study said
"Bariatric surgery although valuable can have major risks and
complications. Recent studies have shown complications and hospitalization
rates of 20-40% after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. The lower risk of complications
and re-hospitalization after the Mini-Gastric bypass shows that patients and
insurers may have access to a safer and less expensive alternative." So as people continue to
look for the quick fix to cut the pounds, the big operation may not result
in the biggest results. Sometimes the best rewards come in small -
or in this case - "mini" packages.

1999 MGB Patient
Hi everyone, and especially to Dr. R and the CLOS / Las Vegas Staff if
you're reading....
By way of background, I had my original MGB with Dr. R back in July of
1999 ( if memory serves, I was Dr. R's 150th or so patient). At that
time, I was well over 365, had type 2 / onset diabetes, swollen
joints, apnea, possibly every item in the book, and am amazed to this day
that I was still alive. Dr. R and the surgery literally saved my life, and I
went to @ 215 lbs in about 6 months (by the end of '99).
... I needed a "jump-start" to get myself motivated again, and I arranged
to have Dr. Rutledge do a Revision.
I had a revision procedure done on April 23rd '08... When I got out of
recovery, he came to visit and advised that I was in "GREAT" shape ... back
in '99, my liver was showing all the signs of "Fatty Liver Syndrome", but
during the Revision he checked the liver, and it looked as healthy and
normal as could possibly be. I am off all cholesterol medication ... for the
first time in years, it seems ... and the results of my recent blood work
(about a month ago) show totally normal cholesterol numbers. My blood
glucose numbers are all VERY normal, and have NOT been on any diabetes
medication since April '99.
Overall, things are great.
Oh ... I forgot ... my weight is now at 199, which marks the first time
since my freshman year of college that I have been under 200 lbs.
My insurance agent is even recommending that I be "re-evaluated" by my
life insurance carrier to see if I can be "upgraded" to a better rating
category. Obviously, based on my past history, I'm paying a small fortune
for my policy ... if under the circumstances (my better health and medical
situation overall) they are willing to give me a better rate, that can only
be a good thing.
Any way, and so it goes ... hope everyone is having a great day.
Best regards,
Michael

Hi All,
I made it!! 199!! Yahoo!! It has been a long time since I saw a 1 at
the front of my weight--like high school. I am 17 months out and am down
139 lbs. My weight loss is still steady, 5 -10 lbs a month.
As an update, I am living in Beaverton, Oregon now. It is lightly
snowing outside right now. My husband and I bought a very nice house at
a reasonable price--compared to LA prices!! I have been busy painting
and fixing it up. I have reinvented myself of sorts up here. I lived
here so long ago that I really don't have any old friends, so I have
been making new ones. I have joined the parks and rec districts and play
tennis 2 or 3 times a week. I also have been working with a personal
trainer at the gym. The cool thing is, she doesn't know how fat I still
think I am. She only knows me for now. She sets challenges for me and I
will swear up and down I can't do-- and only to find out I can. This
week she challenged me to run a mile. Ha! I said. Well I did it, not
once but three times. I love it. I'm a runner!! I'm an athlete!! I would
have never in my wildest dreams thought this surgery could have me
planning for a 5k this summer. Amazing!! It feels so good to be in my
body. My husband can't keep up with me and all that I do. I'm a power
house!!
What an amazing gift this surgery has turned out to be. Sure I wanted
to dodge the diabetes bullet, but this has turned out to be so much
more. I know the surgery is a tool and I am using it for all it is
worth. I want it all!! I'm 34 and I want to be fit and athletic.
I still eat low carb to help with the hypoglycemia and my iron levels
are starting to come back up since I have slowed my periods down with
birth control. My b vitamins are great. Overall, I am doing very well.
And wanted to check in with everyone. Happy holidays!!

Wonderful News from Hollywood! TV
Star
Gil Gerard,
who underwent Mini-Gastric Bypass in Oct. 2005
is now Free of his
Atrial Fibrillation!
TV's BUCK ROGERS, GIL GERARD, has shed 140
pounds after undergoing Mini-Gastric-Bypass surgery. The heavyweight former
TV hunk weighed in at over 350 pounds when doctors told him he was morbidly
obese. The actor, who played
Buck Rogers on TV from 1979 to 1981, agreed to let
Discovery Health channel cameras follow his operations and subsequent
progress. After winning his battle with the bulge in just seven months, the
actor says, "I don't miss that old guy that I was, I really don't." Pal BILL
CLINTON joined Gerard for part of the Discovery special, which debuted in
America on JAN 10, 2007.
Gil's Cardiologist, the crusty Hollywood
cardiologist who has overseen Gil's treatment for
Cardiomyopathy (a disorder of weakened heart muscle) and
Atrial Fibrillation, walked into talk with TV star Gil Gerard.
Gil's Cardiologist had been skeptical that the Mini-Gastric Bypass planned by Gil and
filmed by a Discovery Health TV crew, would be of much help to his former
matinee idol patient.
Cardiomyopathy and
Atrial
fibrillation are both serious medical illnesses that rarely if ever go
away, no matter what the treatment. In many ways they are like Gil's
Type II diabetes, once a diabetic, always a diabetic.
But Dr
his doctor had
never run into the Mini-Gastric Bypass by Dr. Rutledge before.
Following Gil's easy and successful 34 minute Mini-Gastric Bypass in 2005,
Gil was out of the hospital the next day and within weeks after the surgery
Gil's life began to change. He gradually stopped all of his
medications for his Type II Diabetes and for his
cardiomyopathy.
During the following year, his
doctor watched as Gil lost over
140 lbs and continued to get better on an almost daily basis. Still
not convinced, his doctor waited almost a year and half to repeat the heart
studies that showed how well Gil's heart is pumping.
Last week Gil met with his
cardiologist again and this time his doctor entered the room chuckling, smiling
and shaking his head in disbelief. Staring at the report of Gil's
heart test in his hands, his doctor told Gil that by all measures, his sick and
failing heart had returned to normal. His
atrium's size, the heart's
ventricular wall thickness and
ejection
fraction, that had all been abnormal before the Mini-Gastric Bypass
surgery, were now all back to NORMAL!
Gil now had only one remaining
serious illness, the dangerous and deadly killer known as
atrial fibrillation. This uncoordinated contraction of
the heart's
atrium can often lead to
blood clots,
stroke and
death.
To prevent those complications Gil had been treated with the powerful blood
thinner known as
COUMADIN® (Warfarin). Warfarin was originally developed
as a rat poison, causing rats that ate the drug to die of bleeding
complications. While Coumadin is helpful in preventing strokes that occur with atrial fibrillation, Coumadin drug maker
Bristol-Myers Squibb recently added a
black box Warning to Coumadin. A black box warning means that
medical studies indicate that the drug carries a significant risk of serious
or even life-threatening adverse effects. The Coumadin warning is of
possible
"major
or fatal bleeding." According to the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration, Coumadin carries the agency's most serious "black box"
warning on the potentially fatal bleeding risk.
Because of these concerns both Gil and
Gil's Cardiologist
hoped to convert Gil's
atrial fibrillation, the abnormal rhythm in his heart, back to normal sinus
rhythm and then to get him off the dangerous blood thinner, Coumadin. Last week
Gil's Cardiologist
did just that, he successfully converted Gil's heart back into
normal sinus
rhythm, no more atrial fibrillation. Even his skeptical physician had to
celebrate, "Gil" he said "Your heart is back to where it was over 8-10 years
ago." and he broke a smile.
