Disability Awareness Training - Self Direction Community Project Disability Awareness and Equality training is provided by the Self Direction Community Project, based between Falmouth and Penryn, Cornwall. This disability led and run organisation is a registered charity supporting a wide variety of people related issues, providing counselling, advocacy, advice, guidance, support and training to the community including offering City & Guilds accredited training in IT. The Project is also a keen promoter of Agenda 21 principles, and provides support to everybody regardless of their level of disability. Self Direction Community Project was funded until June 2001 for this research project, to provide Disability Awareness Training online in the most accessible way possible, and part of the research is the development of this pilot website including a module of the course entitled 'The Social and Medical Models of Disability'. This website has been designed to be accessible to all users, and is receiving worldwide recognition from disability related groups and organisations. Many universities are interested in the research that is being carried out regarding Internet accessibility as this ties in well with their distance learning programmes. Other recognition includes acceptance as an entry into the Stockholm Challenge competition, and in July 2001 the Project Manager of Self Direction was invited to speak at the European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training (CEDEFOP) during the Agora XII Forum in Thessaloniki, Greece on the subject of 'mental and psychological disabilities: medical fact or social construction?'.
