Obesity is being revolutionised by our greater understanding of the disease. Knowledge in this field is still limited to a few culprit factors that might be involved in the perpetuation of the disease, while less is known about the precise role of the individual factors in the causation or initiation of obesity. Discovery of up to 20 different peptides including Ghrelin Leptin and GLP-1 have given obesity research a boost, opening up areas for further studies. This site aims to give the reader a general overview of obesity and continued update of the different patho-physiological mechanisms elucidated to date, with a detailed discussion of the role of gut hormones in obesity. Recognition of the medical causation of the disease should at the very least change the attitudes of health professionals and public towards obesity as a whole and the obese patient in particular.
So why is such a site needed when there is obesity related material being churned out in every other medical journal? Firstly, no paper-based review article can stand the test of time considering that knowledge in this field is fast evolving. Secondly, hardcore lab and animal data is difficult to be made sense of by the common clinician who has no free time to analyse these studies. Thirdly, access to varied data at one source is always helpful to both researchers and non-researchers alike. Finally, not everyone needs to know in-depth data of every single molecule known to man, but would benefit more from an overview of the currently known and unknowns in this field.
The adipose tissue peptides are accessible through separate navigation buttons. Although the stress is intended to be on Gut hormones, the distinction in some cases may not be clear-cut as a hormone in the gut could act as a neuropeptide in the brain! Adipocyte derived peptides will soon become the increasing focus of this site as more information comes through. Personal views if expressed are clearly indicated and liberal referencing provided to maintain authenticity. Feedback would be a welcome gesture and would help further the scope of this site.
