THE KAHUNA

"An Ancient Essence Present" Many people speak of Kahuna and many claim to have association with that word, but what does it actually mean? The true meaning and usage of Kahuna has become blurred by western psychological understanding and now bears little resemblance to its ancient sacred roots. Kahuna is a Hawaiian word to mean Precious One The Provider, The Keeper of the Sacred Principle. Through family lineage in Hawaiian Society, a man or woman trained to become a Kahuna, an expert or specialist in one or many fields of expertise - navigator, meteorologist, wood carver, carpenter, astrologist, hula dancer, tattooist, canoe builder, housebuilder, farmer, herbalist, bodyworker... whose skills depended on supernatural as well as physical ability. The Kahunas were also the keepers of oral tradition, they held the memories of their ancestors and could trace their origins back to their source. They held the memories of their beginnings back to the source and knew the names of the Gods and Goddesses and the roles they played in the creation of all. These memories were brought alive through chants, songs, musical instruments and dance, called in Hawaiian - Hula. There were different classes of Kahuna reflecting the different classes of society. Lower class Kahuna, High Kahuna, Highest Class Kahuna. Their training was rigorous physically and emotionally and many were unable to reach the high standards and died during the training or were killed to preserve the secrets of the Kahunas. A student was never told they were doing well or praised for their achievements. When they had accomplished the designated task they moved on to the next, and in that forward motion they knew they had done well. They gained through their training a greater than normal or supernatural connection to the flow of nature in their environment extending universally, becoming the mediators between the Gods and Goddesses and the people. They were the ones to be consulted for all needs. The Kahunas gave counsel to the chiefs, Kings and Queens and aside from the ruling class held the highest rank in Hawaiian Kanaka Maoli society. The Kahunas had control over the structure and the organization of society. They chose the most auspicious time and place to plant food, fish, build houses, which tree to cut down, the building of the great canoes, with whom to trade, when and with whom to go to war, who was to live and who was to die. They were fearfully respected and given due reward for their work. Kahunas were always to be found on the east side of the village - the first to be touched by the sun, increasing their mana, thereby increasing the mana of the entire village. To live with and to be trained by a Kahuna was the greatest honor and lifted the entire family's status to a higher rank. With the arrival of the missionaries in Hawaii the Kahunas were driven out of their position in Kanaka Maoli society and were outlawed. They retreated to the high country, the deep forests and mountains and continued their practices and skills by stealth. Eventually all Kahunas became Christians, many of them becoming Christian priests, a paradox of ancient matriarchal nature oriented culture and modern paternal Christianity. There is one remaining Kahuna alive today who lives and teaches the ancient female-based principles - universal principles - of his ancestors, the Kanaka Maoli, the Original Beings. His name is Kahu Abraham Kawai'i Kahu Aua'i'a Maka'i'ole, through his Grandmother's lineage native born Hawaiian Kahuna of the order of 'Olohe. Since the 1960's Kahu has taught thousands of non-Hawaiians using ancient universal principles adapted to the western consciousness to help us to come to a greater understanding of who we are and why we are here. He has revived through genetic memory the sacred Temple Style Bodywork, an ancient form of Bodywork traditionally used only in a temple setting as a way to heal the Hawaiian nobility on a physical level filtering through to the emotional and spiritual levels. It was also part of the rites of passage for the young nobility into hood. With the exception of Lomi Lomi, the common form of massage used within the family, all forms of Hawaiian or Kahuna Bodywork as it is called today has come through Kahu Abrahama Kawai'i the source of an ancient formula adapted to our times. Modern day Kahuna training is in essence personal development, physiologically based psycho-spiritual transformation - using the body instead of the mind with its guardians of attitudes and conditioning to gain direct access to dormant genetic memories. A series of movements are used, a dance, Ka'alele au (English: Flight of the Navigator) adapted from Hula steps and using the principles of martial arts - posture, presence, positioning and breath. The training is in principle, allowing for personal expression of genetic memories within the boundaries of an ancient protocol. With the awakening of genetic memories comes a deep respect and love for yourself. No longer a feeling of disconnection, an aloneness and a yearning for identity. All that you need is within you. You begin to lead a richer fuller life - a life of independence and personal power to make lasting profound changes in your life, to change non contributing inherited patterns, thereby raising the level of your entire genetic family - those who have been, those who live now and those who are to come. We do in effect become noble, survivors of our genetic past, re-shapers of our genetic future, dignity and respect in our own and our children's bearing, "When I speak, I speak for my ancestors, When I breathe, I breathe for my past, When I move my entire Family moves with me, When you see me, you see my beginnings, I stand, and my entire Family stands and applauds." - Written by Haku Gaylyn Ho'okere Aitken Kahuna Sciences Training CentreKahuna Bodywork ] [ Kahuna Training ] [ Kahuna Courses ] [ Your Teacher ] [ Kahuna Links ]
