Catching Up

Once I realized I wasn’t going to hit my goal of posting every day this month I kind of drifted off on to other things, but that doesn’t mean I’m still not here. I’ve got a bunch of things in the fire so I thought I’d just do a brain dump of everything here and then hopefully flesh some of this out later.First, I have to share this awesome site I found today via Blogoscoped. It’s called LetMeGoogleThatForYou.com. Every been on a forum or been sent an email where someone asks a question that they obviously didn’t try very hard to research the answer? Let’s say for example “what does ROTFLOL stand for?” Well then you create a link that looks like this:http://letmegooglethatforyou.com/?q=rotflolClick on this link to see it in action. I think it’s pretty funny.I’m currently reading Two Weeks Under by Rivka Tadjer, whose publicist sent me a copy for review. After that I’ll be reading The Source: Unleash Your Natural Energy, Power Up Your Health, and Feel 10 Years Younger by Woodson Merrell.I’ve been trying out a couple different brands of whey protein powder the last few weeks, I’m hoping to eventually get up a post with my findings.Call me crazy, but I bought some Colon Cleanse Pro that I have been taking religiously since Monday and I plan to put up a post or two about that experience - certainly one and maybe more than one if it actually works at all. So far, nothing, which is what I expect to be honest.Still have to put together a review on the MP3 players sent to my by Sansa. And I also have a package from Sensa that I want to try.I didn’t take the time to post an update on Sunday but I did actually lose a pound and I had a pretty good week last week on the exercise front. I’ve maintained that weight so far this week although I have not exercised at all. I’m eating pretty well overall.OK, I feel better now that I posted. Now to go exercise! If you enjoyed this post, please consider subscribing. Thank you for visiting! 4 Comments Filed under Observations November 15th, 2008

4 Tips For Getting PR People To Send You Free Stuff

You probably have noticed that I occasionally get free products that I review and/or give away in contests (how cool was that giving away a free bike?!). Steve from Weight Loss Weapons did, and he asked me:You seem to get free stuff to review all the time. Do they contact you or are you going after them?I really haven’t thought about that before now, but I thought my response deserved a longer remark than just responding to his comment, so here is my answer, 4 Tips For Getting PR People To Send You Free Stuff:1) Rank on the first page or two of Google for the search phrase “[your keyword] blog”. In my case, I have been on the first or second page of Google for “weight loss blog” (#7 as of right now) for a number of months. Why is this important? Because PR firms are recognizing the power of word of mouth advertising and see blogs as a great (and cheap) way to get the message out about the product they are pitching. Put yourself in the shoes of a PR person trying to promote some new bottle of wine for example. I think a Google search for “wine blog” would be a reasonable starting point for their program, and by doing so they will find a solid list of bloggers who are no doubt willing to accept a free bottle of wine in return for a mention or even a full review.2) When you do review a product, be completely honest. First, any PR person worth their salt will not set any expectation that you review their product or if you do that it is a positive review. They believe in their product so they are willing to take that risk. If someone tries to set that expectation with you, then I would consider not accepting what they are offering. This is important because in order for your readers to trust you, the reviews you put in front of them should be honest. This means that you will occasionally not like something you are reviewing. If that is the case you should be sure to be honest and say you don’t like it. Why? Because it makes the good reviews that much more believable. If a PR person reads your blog and sees that you are honest it is more likely they will want to work with you (the honest ones, that is!) If you do get a product you don’t like but that you think would be of value to a reader, consider offering the product in a contest giveaway rather than writing a review. That is really all I have done to date. However, there are two more things that I know work and that I am going to be starting to push harder on:3) Sign up for a word-of-mouth media network like BzzAgent. These networks looks for everyday consumers who believe in honest word-of-mouth and who like to discover new and interesting products and share their experiences with others. Philips Sonicare recently sent out 30,000 $70 toothbrushes to BzzAgents who had expressed a desire to receive them. I suspect that not all the offers will be as cool as that!4) Ask them to send you stuff. Got a product you would like to try? Find out who the PR firm is and pitch yourself (and your blog) on why they should send you their product. For example, let’s say you really liked those cool BodyBuggs as featured on NBC’s The Biggest Loser. Looking at their website I see they are made by Apex Fitness. A quick Google search for “who is the PR firm for Apex Fitness” reveals the answer: The M-Line Inc. (UPDATE: Apex contacted me and told me they now do their PR in-house). Contact them in whatever manner you are comfortable with - email, phone, special mailer, whatever. If you see a contest where I am giving away a BodyBugg you will know it worked! If you would like to learn more about the relationship between bloggers and PR people I highly recommend these two posts on Problogger:Understanding PR People for Fun and ProfitHow to use PR People to Build Traffic for your BlogP.S. If anyone from the Austin, Nichols Distilling Co. wants to send me a bottle of Wild Turkey I will happily accept it, although I probably won’t be reviewing it here! 17 Comments Filed under Observations November 14th, 2008

Motivated by Music

Well so much for NaBloPoMo! My best intentions of posting every day this month went up in flames on Wednesday, then I had a decided lack of motivation yesterday after knowing that I won’t be hitting what I had hoped was a simple goal - writing every day this month. I also have not run every day this week like I had set out to. After doing cardio on Monday and Tuesday I took Wednesday off (although I did do a 4 mile walk around the lake with my wife) and then for the same reason that I didn’t write yesterday I also didn’t exercise. But here it is Friday and I just knocked out a couple of miles on the treadmill and I had a whey protein shake for dinner. What got me motivated after a couple of days off from exercising?Music.I received a couple of packages today. The first was a replacement battery for an APC UPS that was croaking (is there anything more irritating than the beeping from a dying UPS?). Looking forward to getting that thing fixed. The second package was a care package from my friends at Sansa, who sent me a couple of cool new music players to try out.One of the devices comes preloaded with workout music - the Sansa slotMusic bundle with the Don’t Quit card. I decided that it would be a pretty good excuse to hit the treadmill with my new music, and half an hour later I was covered in sweat and totally tired. All thanks to some new music.I’ll post a full review of the music player later, but for now I’ll say it’s a pretty cool little player with a lot of possibilities. It got me to workout tonight - that’s something! 8 Comments Filed under Exercising November 11th, 2008

Knocking Out Some Cardio

I did something today that I am pretty proud of. It isn’t on the scale of the two mile run I did back in January, but considering where I have been lately in terms of exercising, it was pretty good. I’m back on the couch to 5k training program, starting back at week 4. Last week I did one day of cardio and I almost made it through the first day of the week 4 program then, but in the last 5 minute run my heart rate just got too high and I had to walk it off.Yesterday the same thing - I did day one of week 4 again and had to start walking during the last 5 minute run. But today I did cardio again (I am trying to run every day this week) and I slogged through the whole day as described in the plan. My heart rate peaked at 172, which is pretty high considering that my maximum heart rate is supposed to be 178, but I pushed through and made it.I know there is absolutely no way I could run for two miles right now like I did back in January when I was also on week 4, so that kind of bums me out, but I am not worrying about that and focusing on the positives - I’ve run for two days straight and I completed the full day like I set out to do.As an aside, one thing that is worrying me right now is my right knee. Ever since coaching soccer this summer it has been sore from kicking the soccer ball - I’m sure because pressure was exerted in places where it normally wouldn’t be - and I’m not doing it any favors by coaching again this winter. So I have been kind of hobbling around lately, which is a bummer. But, I don’t really notice it on the treadmill so hopefully I can continue with my cardio plans for the week.I guess I’ll also mention that I’ve eaten pretty well so far this week - I’ve avoided the major binges, stayed away from the Halloween candy and I’ve had some whey protein shakes as meal substitutes for lunch. I just ate a big late night snack which I am regretting, however. Remember how you feel right now John so you don’t do that again! All in all, I feel pretty good about the week so far. Hoping the results are there. 15 Comments Filed under Feelings November 10th, 2008

How To Lose Your Love Handles And Strengthen Your Abs With One Simple Workout

This is a guest post by Mario John Da Silva. One of the biggest questions I’ve heard at gyms is “how can I get rid of my love handles“. Now for those of you who don’t know, love handles are the layers of fat that cover your obliques. But let me tell you one thing; losing love handles is no different from losing fat from other parts of the body. The additional thing you have to do, however, is to work your obliques. This too will be covered later in the article. When asked questions regarding love handles and how to lose them, trainers usually give just one answer; go running. Now this isn’t exactly bad, but it isn’t really great either. In fact, it would be safe to say that there is a much better way to go about losing these lumps of fat at your waist; intense circuit training. Now before I give you a great circuit workout, I’ll give you some of the benefits of using this technique of weight loss I’ve just suggested. Such intense circuit training is a form of anaerobic training. And what anaerobic training does is that it creates an oxygen deficit in you. Studies have shown that such a deficit results in a greater amount of calories burnt. And this is what makes circuit training more effective than running. But it doesn’t end there.Intense circuit training also speeds up your metabolism rate, and this ensures that you burn more calories even after you finish your workout. And this is what truly makes such circuit training far more effective than any amounts of running. Now here is the Intense Circuit Training Workout that can help you get rid of your love handles (with the exercises to strengthen your obliques as well). Circuit Training WorkoutExercise 1: 25 Push Upercise 2: 25 Squatercise 3: 25 Cruncheercise 4: 25 Lunges1 set consists of all 4 exercises completed.Do 3 sets.To get the maximum effect from this workout, make sure that you do these exercises at a fast pace, and with no rest in between each exercise. Also, make sure that you take a rest of a maximum of 30 seconds in between each set. Now the crunches itself can work your obliques out. So you can choose to perform a more targeted exercise if you want. Oblique Exercises- Oblique Crunch- Weight Side Bends- Side Leg Raise- Reverse Twists- Broom TwistsWell there you have it, the circuit shown above can really help you burn fat, not only your love handles, but from other parts of your body as well. Just make sure you don’t unnecessarily overdo the workout. I would recommend you to do this about thrice a week, and on days you are not lifting weights. Be sure to keep a diary to record your progress as well, so that you can increase the number of reps accordingly as time goes by. Lastly, best of luck with this workout and in losing weight!Mario John Da Silva is an avid gym-goer and is passionate about weight loss and fitness. He has written articles on these subjects. At his college, he is also regarded as the go-to guy when it comes to fitness, and he’s helped numerous friends get started on working out. Mario promotes only the best weight loss programmes, after having inspected them himself.
