Saturday November 08th 2008, 7:28 pm Filed under: random So, I logged in tonight to actually blog about something training related and I found a comment waiting for moderation that was asking if I was still training. Ha. Yes, I know. Neglected blog. Neglected training. The thing is, it’s the off season. I typically hit off season still a little focused. I dial back a bit in terms of duration and intensity, but I’m usually still hitting the same workouts. I’m still in the pool. I’m still running. This season, however, has been a little different. I’ve been very casual about my workouts. I haven’t been scheduling anything on a weekly basis, which is WEIRD for me. I’ve gotten in what I can, but I haven’t been really logging, tracking, etc. In fact, the weirdest part is that my heart rate monitor broke during Ashland half-marathon weekend in early October, and I haven’t gotten it fixed nor purchased a replacement. I’ve been running and working out sans numbers. Crazy. I’ve still been trying to log my stuff in Training Peaks. Which was funny this week when I logged in and found my frigging mug on the homepage! Me on the cover of TrainingPeaks.com A while back, one of the founders asked if they could feature me and I totally forgot I agreed. So, it was uber weird to show up at the site and see this ginormous photo of myself. Kind of cool, though. I don’t know. It was a tough summer. I did complete a lot of events, but my heart wasn’t in a lot of them and I was pretty happy to finally hit the off-season with no goals, no obligations. The puppy Dora has also entered into the equation because she needs lots of walking and, three mornings a week, I can’t go to the gym because James’ teaches those mornings. So that’s really changed the routine. But what have I been doing? Well, a lot of walking. A lot of yoga and some running. I’ve also started back to Spin class and I’m hoping to start swimming again in the next few weeks as well. I’ve also started dryland training with my Ski team, but that’s just one or two workouts a week (if I get to those). It’s been kind of nice to be so relaxed about my program. It’s not going to stay that way, but after a few years of being so “on” all year, I think I’ve needed this. Work has also been crazy and taking a lot of focus so I’ve been concentrating on that a lot as well. All that said, I did come here to post about one thing specifically. Because I haven’t been able to hit the gym as much as I used do with the puppy in the house, I’ve decided to try out Podfitness.com again. A number of months back, I subscribed. But I had problems with the download tool. One of about 10 workouts actually worked for me and I gave up. The thing is, I didn’t unsubscribe like I thought I had. James actually let me know just a few weeks ago that the fee was still coming out of our credit card (I had no idea!). So, I called the guys there and they were pretty nice. I pleaded my story. They actually credited me a few months of service for what I’ve paid for and hadn’t used. They also told me they upgraded the Mac software, so my experience should be better. So, today, I did a 45 minute spin workout by one of their cycling coaches and followed it with 90 minutes of yoga. The spin class was a little basic in terms of instruction, but I was still able to make it hard enough to get a nice, sweaty workout. And the yoga class was actually pretty challenging for a “first download.” I was pretty amazed when all was said and done and I’d worked out for 2 hours and 15 minutes upstairs. It was the next best thing to classes at the gym. It’s super convenient. And I do love having spin workouts comprised of all my great tunes. I’m looking forward to follow-up workouts. I’ve already downloaded a pilates class. They have running as well. A bunch of other things, too, but I’ll probably stick to these core four. So, there you go. Just in time for winter training (and it certainly did turn cold here in Minnesota this week), some fresh indoor workouts. 0 Comments Ode to Funnymoods Thursday October 30th 2008, 8:17 pm Filed under: random Hi blog.I miss you.I’m sorry that Twitter and Facebook have taken over my online life.Micro-blogging is simple. But you are my first and true love. 2 Comments Falconer Vineyards in Red Wing Saturday October 18th 2008, 6:28 pm Filed under: random Falconer Vineyards in Red WingOriginally uploaded by hlockwooPerfect end to a fall hike. 0 Comments Dead Dora Sunday October 12th 2008, 12:42 pm Filed under: random Dead DoraOriginally uploaded by hlockwooCabin weekend will do that to a dog. 1 Comment Goodbye weekend Sunday October 12th 2008, 12:01 pm Filed under: Running, random Goodbye weekendOriginally uploaded by hlockwooSaying goodbye to a beautiful Ashland weekend. 0 Comments Sausage making in the house Saturday October 04th 2008, 2:07 pm Filed under: random Sausage making in the houseOriginally uploaded by hlockwooGetting ready for L’oktoberfest 2008 2 Comments Minnesotans for Change Sunday September 21st 2008, 5:12 pm Filed under: random I haven’t written much about the election here. But I don’t think it is any secret that I was a Hillary girl. I have always loved her, I always will. I was sad when she didn’t win the Democratic nomination. But I can’t begrudge the Obama supporters. I honestly believe that he is a good guy, that he has surrounded himself with the right people. And when Hillary asked, “Are you in it for me? Or are you it in for Barney Smith?”—the answer was a no-brainer. In it for Barney Smith. (And for those of you who didn’t see this at the DNC, Barney Smith was a “regular person” who got up and spoke and made a reference to helping Barney Smith, not Smith Barney). At any rate, I licked my wounds a bit after Hillary lost the nomination and have move forward in full support of Obama. I’ve contributed money to his campaign. I have my button and lawn sign. I do enter into debate when appropriate. And I honestly want to believe that we are on the right side of history this time. Our country is a mess. We have the largest national deficit our country has ever seen and I do not know many people first hand at all who have benefited from the current administration in the past 8 years. Our economy is a mess. We are in a war that we shouldn’t be fighting (and honestly, what does “winning” it even mean? They say we’re close to “winning” but I’ve yet to find a definition of what “winning this war” is). Our health care costs continue to soar. And I’m awestruck by those who are taking the brunt of this current climate yet still in support of the Republican regime. I’m also sicked by the way the McCain/Palin campaign has hyjacked the “change” message—like they are going to bring it. In fact, I actually fear what Palin and her socially conservative platform could do to our country. Not to mention the fact that she is essentially Dick Cheney with lipstick. She’ll bring a new generation of cronism to the White House. And if you think that is the just the liberal Heather spouting her rhetoric on that one, you really need to read this article: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/14/us/politics/14palin.html?ex=1379217600&en=fb638360c988b24e&ei=5124&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink. Whew. I honestly didn’t mean to get that into it all, but there you go. No, the whole point of this blog entry is that something peculiar and pleasant happened today. I happened to pick up an Obama/Biden t-shirt yesterday and I wore it today. And with that, a funny thing happened. All the quiet, closed-up Minnesotans I’m used to walking past on any given Sunday, actually looked up and acknowledged me today. A number of them even smiled. More surprisingly, an impressive number actually connect with me by verbal recognition, thumbs up, high-fives and yes-we’re-going-to-do-this. The most common, “I like your t-shirt” with a glimmer in the eye. It was actually funny. I’ve lived in this state for almost 7 years now and I’ve only just begun to accept the way the people are here. They don’t talk to strangers at the gym or in the grocery store. They stick to their circles. Making friends is hard. There isn’t a lot of eye contact and while they might be polite to you, they certainly aren’t going to invite you to happy hour. But today, I felt I penetrated that vibe with a simple t-shirt and a message of change. It felt good. And it made me optimistic. 5 Comments Square Lake Results Monday September 08th 2008, 11:24 am Filed under: race reports More later, but here are the numbers for the 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.2 mile run: Total time: 6:11:57 175th out of 210 overall24th out of 35 females overall6th out of 10 females age 35-39 Stats:Swim: 41:29 (avg. 1:58/100 yards)T1: 2:32Bike: 3:07:03 (18.0 mph)T2: 2:29Run: 2:18:25 (10:30/mi pace) Just a few notes: These races are humbling. The caliber of athletes is always higher and it’s tough to see your rankings fall in overall percentile. I’m used to finishing sprints & olympics in the top third, but with Half IM distance, I’m consistently in the bottom third. This year’s swim course was longer than last year. I was looking at last year’s numbers and noticed both the run and swim times are longer this year. Could have been the weather (at least for the run), but it also looks like it went from a 1 mile swim to a 1.2 mile swim. I’m sore as HELL today. I was under trained going into this and my body is paying for it now. Steps = pain which is totally fun in the land of the escalators where I work. I’m actually pretty pleased with my 6:11:57 finish. I was guesstimating a finish of 6-1/2 – 7 hours because of my current fitness level. But finishing just off of Racine’s pace (with a longer swim course and a much hillier bike & run) have me pretty pleased—not to mention I did all of this in crazy conditions of cold and rain. So, yay! 2 Comments Good Morning, Mr. Swim Course!
