You are: Home Welcome An estimated 3 million people in the UK suffer from Osteoporosis. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 12 men over the age of 50 will develop the disease. Without treatment osteoporosis can cause painful and disabling fractures, particularly in the wrist, hip and spine. It also costs the NHS and government over £15 million a day or, £1.9 billion each year. The Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) developed an evidence-based guideline on Osteoporosis which was published in May 2003 – SIGN 71: Management of Osteoporosis. The guideline was widely distributed to clinicians throughout Scotland and published on the SIGN website. The guideline was promoted through a press launch and the media in collaboration with the National Osteoporosis Society (NOS). However there were concerns that the recommendations made in the guideline might not be implemented without further awareness and support. As a result, the Osteoporosis Guideline Initiative was established between SIGN, the NOS and the ABPI to assist in the implementation of the guideline. The aims of the initiative are to raise awareness of best practice in the management of osteoporosis as defined by the SIGN guideline and the NOS, and to encourage change in practice, where variation exists, to improve patient care. For more information about the Osteoporosis Guideline Initiative click here   Scottish Osteoporosis Conference Osteoporosis in Scotland was a one day (October 13th, 2004) multidisciplinary clinical conference to support awareness and implementation of the SIGN Osteoporosis Guideline. This conference raised awareness of osteoporosis as a major public health problem for Scotland. Focusing on the recommendations of SIGN 71, the conference included an update on new treatments, the management of osteoporosis and current service delivery in Scotland. It also provided an ideal opportunity to meet with colleagues.
